Alberta issues record setting fine to Chinese state-owned oil firm

An Alberta judge has ordered the Canadian arm of a Chinese state-owned oil company to pay the biggest workplace safety fine in the province's history after the death of two foreign workers at a massive construction project about five years ago.

?The fine is good, but no amount of money can make up for what they did wrong in the first place,? said Wayne Prins, Alberta director of the Christian Labour Association of Canada (CLAC).

?In our view, the fine sends the right message to contractors and people in the industry that you must follow the procedures and rules in place.?

Alberta Provincial Judge John Maher ordered Sinopec Shanghai Engineering Company (SSEC) to pay a $1.5 million fine in a St. Albert court room on Jan. 24.

The fine is related to the deaths of a welder named Ge Genbao, 27, and an electrical engineer named Lui Hongliang, 33, at the Canadian Natural Resources Ltd. (CNRL) Horizon oilsands project.

They were killed on April 27, 2007 at the facility located north of Fort McMurray.

The Chinese temporary foreign workers were welding the wall structure inside a massive storage tank when the roof support structure collapsed onto them.

Two other foreign workers were seriously injured.

Under Alberta?s Occupational Health and Safety Act, 53 charges were laid against three companies in the deaths of Genbao and Hongliang and the injuries of the other workers.

CNRL, who was in charge of the construction site at the Horizon oilsands project, hired SSEC to build the storage tanks.

SSEC is the Canadian subsidiary of Chinese state ?owned oil company Sinopec.

Sinopec hired more than 100 temporary foreign workers in China and began work on the construction of two oil storage tanks in late 2006.

SSEC pled guilty to three charges in September 2012 of failing to ensure the health and safety of workers.

The company was given the maximum $500,000 fine for each charge. Despite this fact, some people believe the fine will do nothing to deter them from practices that endanger workers.

?Sinopec didn?t just import workers from the third world, they also imported third-world health and safety standards,? said Alberta Federation of Labour President Gil McGowan.

?Alberta missed its chance to send a message that Chinese companies working in the oilsands need to play by Canadian rules.?

McGowan argued that the fines are too small to make a difference to the massive corporation.

?One and a half million dollars doesn?t even amount to a rounding error in the annual budget of a monstrous global corporation like Sinopec,? he said.

?This fine does nothing to dissuade them from playing fast and loose with the safety of their workforce.?

The original plan was to build the tank walls first, then use them to support the roof while it was under construction.

That plan changed when the project fell behind schedule.

CNRL approved the construction change, but SSEC did not prepare any formal written procedures that should have been certified by a professional engineer.

As a result, other charges in this case include failing to ensure that a professional engineer prepared and certified drawings and procedures; failing to ensure the roof support structure inside the tank was stable during assembly; failing to ensure that U-bolt type clips used for fastening rope wire were installed properly; and failing to ensure that wire rope being used was safe.

?We shouldn?t forget the circumstances that led to the deaths of Genbao and Hongliang,? McGowan added.

?The company did not get the construction plans certified by an engineer. The wires weren?t strong enough to hold up against the wind. It was a complete abdication of responsibility on the part of the employer.?

Crown prosecutors and SSEC lawyers came up with an agreement, which allocates $1.3 million of the fine to create an education program to train temporary foreign workers about their legal rights, as well as workplace health and safety.

The program aims to hire 45 instructors to train about 5,500 workers in a three year period.

Sheepshead Bites ? Blog Archive New Flood Zone Lines Are Here ...

Source: FEMA via the New York Times

Earlier in the month, we reported that FEMA was planning to redraw and expand the flood zone lines for New York City for the first time since 1983. The redrawn flood zones, which carry heavy financial?consequences?for homeowners living in those regions, are officially here, according to a report in the New York Times.

FEMA was redrawing the maps right before Superstorm Sandy struck. The new lines place more 35,000 homes in flood zones, creating an unavoidable rise in insurance rates while also forcing the city to adapt the building code to account for potential floods. The Times explained in greater detail what the redrawn flood zone lines means for the city:

The maps will not formally go into effect for about two years, but the mayor?s office was already preparing an executive order to help owners of damaged homes rebuild to higher standards. That means that a badly damaged home that was not in the old flood zone, but is in the new one, would be allowed to rebuild to prepare for dangers predicted in the new maps. For instance, a home could be hoisted onto posts or pilings, which might have previously been disallowed because of zoning. ?We?re working on an order that will enable people to rebuild, but rebuild in a way that?s safer,? said Caswell F. Holloway, the city?s deputy mayor for operations.

The expenses will undoubtedly be high for people forced to meet the new building regulations. According to the New York Times, a $250,000 home with a ground floor four feet below sea level, will have to pay a staggering $9,500 a year in flood insurance. By comparison, a home hoisted three feet above the flood line will only have to pay $427 a year.

FEMA is looking to help offset costs by providing $30,000 to homeowners to meet the new regulations when rebuilding. Whether that will be enough to raise a house on stilts is another question entirely.

?This is going to be very rough on people,? Chuck Reichenthal, district manager for Brooklyn?s Community Board 13, told the Times. ?Insurance is going to zoom through the roof.?

Cool, new views of Andromeda galaxy

Jan. 28, 2013 ? Two new eye-catching views from the Herschel space observatory are fit for a princess. They show the elegant spiral galaxy Andromeda, named after the mythical Greek princess known for her beauty.

The Andromeda galaxy, also known as Messier 31, lies 2 million light-years away, and is the closest large galaxy to our own Milky Way. It is estimated to have up to one trillion stars, whereas the Milky Way contains hundreds of billions. Recent evidence suggests Andromeda's overall mass may in fact be less than the mass of the Milky Way, when dark matter is included.

Herschel, a European Space Agency mission with important NASA contributions, sees the longer-wavelength infrared light from the galaxy, revealing its rings of cool dust. Some of this dust is the very coldest in the galaxy -- only a few tens of degrees above absolute zero.

In both views, warmer dust is highlighted in the central regions by different colors. New stars are being born in this central, crowded hub, and throughout the galaxy's rings in dusty knots. Spokes of dust can also be seen between the rings.

One view, seen at http://www.jpl.nasa.gov/spaceimages/details.php?id=PIA16682 , is a mosaic of data from Herschel's Photodetecting Array Camera and Spectrometer (PACS) and spectral and photometric imaging receiver (SPIRE).

The second view, seen at http://www.jpl.nasa.gov/spaceimages/details.php?id=PIA16681 , shows data from only the SPIRE instrument, which captures the longest of wavelengths detectable by Herschel.

Herschel is a European Space Agency cornerstone mission, with science instruments provided by consortia of European institutes and with important participation by NASA. NASA's Herschel Project Office is based at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif. JPL contributed mission-enabling technology for two of Herschel's three science instruments. The NASA Herschel Science Center, part of the Infrared Processing and Analysis Center at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, supports the United States astronomical community. Caltech manages JPL for NASA.

New research sets out alternative approach to preparing for pandemics

'Evil' scientists, deadly viruses and terrorist plots are usually the preserve of Hollywood blockbusters. But when it comes to pandemic influenza, it is the stuff of real life. As controversy about research into the H5N1 bird flu virus continues, a new paper argues for a complete overhaul of current approaches to pandemic preparedness.

To Pandemic or Not? Reconfiguring Global Responses to Influenza, by Dr Paul Forster, of the ESRC STEPS Centre, investigates the H1N1 swine flu pandemic of 2009-10 and sets out some vital lessons if we are to prepare for pandemic influenza effectively, while avoiding confusing and costly mistakes.

When the H1N1 outbreak in 2009-10 was milder than the World Health Organization had predicted, WHO was accused of colluding with the pharmaceutical industry and national governments of squandering billions. The Council of Europe said US$18 billion was wasted, and branded WHO's actions "one of the greatest medical scandals of the century". The event revealed weaknesses in the world's current configuration of planning for and responding to pandemic influenza, according to Dr Forster.

Science, public health policy makers and the worldwide public were confounded by the uncertainty, complexity and politics of pandemic influenza and the high emotions it inspires. Amid this confusion, the global and national institutions responsible for protecting public health were shown to be over-reliant on a reductive, science-led approach that prioritised a one-size-fits-all response, and failed to address the needs and priorities of the world's poorest and most vulnerable people. Dr Forster suggests new ways to construct plural responses more suited to tackling the globalised mix of politics, people and pathogens that pandemics produce.

"Preparing for an influenza pandemic means preparing for surprises and being ready to respond rapidly and flexibly under conditions of uncertainty. If people across the globe are to be ready, plural and diverse response pathways are required," said Dr Forster, an independent development consultant and STEPS Centre researcher. "The world would be better protected by a re-ordering of pandemic preparedness and response efforts around the needs of the world's poorest, most vulnerable, and most exposed people," he added.

A re-ordered response would allow the undue pre-eminence of pharmaceuticals to be examined, and bring focus on the pressing need for disease surveillance in animals, scrutiny of contemporary agricultural practices and a broadening of research efforts. It might also refresh the World Health Organization's approach, which Dr Forster believes supports an inflexible and narrow set of interests by default, rather than conspiracy.

With most flu experts agreeing that it is not so much a question of if, but rather when, a new pandemic will arrive, the sooner the lessons of outbreaks such as that in 2009-10 can be learned, the better.

John R. Talbott: If Eating Chocolate Can Make You Smarter, Can It Also Make You an Olympic Skier?

I don't know how many of you saw this article in the New England Journal of Medicine published on October 10, 2012 (Chocolate Consumption, Cognitive Function, and Nobel Laureates). In it, the author, Franz H. Messerli, M.D., claims to have found a strong linear correlation (r=.791) between the amount of chocolate consumed by a country and the number of Nobel Prize winners from that country, both measured on a per capita basis. Dr. Messerli is a cardiologist and director of Clinical Hypertension with St. Luke's and Roosevelt Hospital.

Here are his findings;

While Messerli warns in his paper that the existence of a correlation does not imply causation, this did not stop the popular media from running stories with these headlines:

"Eating Chocolate May Help You Win Nobel Prize" - CBS News

"Correlation Between Country's Chocolate Consumption And Nobel Prize Winners 'Surprisingly Powerful,' Says Study" - Associated Press

"Why Chocolate Makes You Smart (or Peaceful)" - Psychology Today

"Study links eating chocolate to winning Nobels" - USA Today

Messerli's results immediately got my attention because I have been doing a lot of work lately on sugar and how deleterious it is to one's diet and its links to obesity, and chocolate often finds itself attached to sugar when consumed.

I decided to do my own study to make a point. I decided to see if there was a correlation between the amount of chocolate a country consumes and the number of Winter Olympic medals the country has won over time, both measured on a per capita basis.

Here are my results:

2013-01-27-Screenshot20130127at6.01.42PM.png

While my correlation statistics are not quite as good as Dr Messerli's, certainly they are strong enough to get published in any respectable academic journal (correlation coefficient =.57). Note: The correlation would have been even better if the Danes and the Irish, both big consumers of chocolate had more than only one Winter Olympic medal won between them.

So what is going on here? Can eating chocolate make you more likely to win a Nobel Prize? If so, then by the same logic it appears that eating chocolate can make you a better skier or skater.

Unfortunately, I don't believe either of these suppositions is correct. I think these false correlations exist because chocolate consumption, Nobel Prize winning and Winter Olympic medals are all correlated with something else which is not ever raised in these studies.

What might that something else be. I would argue chocolate consumption, Nobels and Winter Olympic medals increase with the following factors:

  • The average income of a country
  • Whether the country is majority white
  • Whether the country is in northern Europe
  • Whether the country is Scandanavian
  • Whether the country is Sweden (the decider of Nobels)

If these are the true causal variables to how much chocolate is consumed, one cannot conclude that eating more chocolate makes you smarter, or, a better skier.

This is a classic problem in statistics known as the omitted variable problem. You can get very good correlation statistics between two, or here three variables which may not be causally related at all, but rather, both are correlated and caused by a third yet undisclosed variable.

Alas, if you want to get smarter you will have to go back to reading books and if you want to ski better you will have to hit the slopes. But, if you want to get fat, just keep eating sugar-laced chocolate treats.

John R. Talbott is a best selling author and economic consultant to families whose books predicted the housing crash and the economic crisis. You can read more about his books, the accuracy of his predictions and his financial consulting activities at www.stopthelying.com

Special day for Mooney family as they become Aussies - Council ...

HEIDI Mooney will be among those becoming a citizen on Australia Day - and she has four legs and a tail.

The St Bernard is one of eight members of the Mooney family who will attend the citizenship ceremony at Mosman's Drill Hall on Saturday.

Jaz Mooney said the beloved family pet was just as proud to call Australia home as the rest of his Irish clan.

"She'll wear an Australian collar and celebrate with us," he said.

"She's part of the family."

Heidi made the journey from Ireland to Australia with Jaz, wife Karen and their five children Bethan, Ben, Rhiannon, Angharad and Megan. The family marked seven years in Australia on Monday, after leaving their Belfast home for a better life.

"Coming from Northern Ireland we're told the UK doesn't want you, Dublin doesn't want you but come to Australia, we want you," he said.

"There is no better place to bring up kids than Australia and no better place to live than Mosman."

Mr Mooney and his Welsh wife Karen fell in love with Australia and each other during a backpacking holiday more than 25 years ago.

"We always wanted to come back," Mrs Mooney said.

Mr Mooney, a publican, said he loved Australia's blue skies, beaches and barbecues.

"But most important of all is freedom. Whatever your religious or political views you're allowed to express them freely."

AUSTRALIA DAY?

55 people will become Australian citizens at a ceremony at Mosman's Drill Hall on Australia Day.

Most of those making the pledge originate from the United Kingdom, New Zealand and South Africa.

The ceremony will begin at 10am followed by an Australia Day Address by Krystal Barter, the naming of Mosman's Citizen and Young Citizen of the Year and a barbecue.

Flight carrying 3 Canadians missing in Antarctica

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) ? A small plane carrying three Canadians disappeared while flying over an Antarctic mountain range, and bad weather Thursday was hampering a search.

The flight was going from a U.S. station near the South Pole to an Italian research base in Terra Nova Bay. Its emergency locator started transmitting about 10 p.m. Wednesday in a mountainous area about 450 kilometers (280 miles) north of the pole.

New Zealand, U.S. and Italian authorities are working together to find the de Havilland Twin Otter plane, which they presume has crashed. It was carrying survival equipment including tents and food, according to New Zealand Search and Rescue Mission Coordinator John Ashby.

New Zealand authorities said a Hercules C130 aircraft flew to the Queen Alexandra mountain range early Thursday but was unable to see the aircraft.

Ashby said in a statement Thursday afternoon that a DC3 aircraft flew over the area where the beacon was transmitting but heavy cloud prevented the rescuers from seeing the ground or any sign of the plane.

"Weather conditions are extremely challenging," Ashby said.

He said that winds had reached 90 knots (104 miles) per hour and heavy snow was predicted.

He said several planes and helicopters were standing by in Antarctica, waiting until conditions improved so they could travel to the site.

The plane is owned and operated by Kenn Borek Air Ltd., a Canadian firm based in Calgary that charters aircraft to the U.S. Antarctic program. In a release, the National Science Foundation (NSF) said the plane was flying in support of the Italian Antarctic Program.

There are no permanent residents in Antarctica but typically the population there swells to several thousand in the Southern Hemisphere summer as a number of countries send scientists and other staff to research stations. The U.S. runs the largest program, with about 850 staff at its McMurdo Station and another 200 at its Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station, where the plane was flying from.

Published Bestsellers: Book Savvy Spotlight on Ray Matthews

Bringing you exclusive interviews with authors featured in the Book Savvy Newsletter.

Our Guest is?Ray Matthews*

Enjoy the interview.

Q1. Can you tell us a little about yourself and your book 'Me and my Shadow?
I am now living my dream life - doing almost all the things I ever wanted and fulfilling ambitions that were not possible before retirement whilst fully occupied earning a living. 'Youth is wasted on the young' is an understated comment made by my father, oh how true. Writing 'Me and My Shadow' has opened up new avenues I never thought possible. 'Me and My Shadow' is about a dedication to achieving goals in extreme sports.? The book is about endurance running events and how it all began with boxing as a young boy brought up in a South Yorkshire steelmaking town.

?

Q2. Why did you write this book?
To start with, I wrote this book mainly as a record of some of my challenges and then later for my own satisfaction.

?

Q3. What provided the inspiration for you to become a writer in the first place?
The inspiration behind the writing of this book came from a number of friends, who almost demanded I write an account about my life. In fact one particular friend actually grabbed the collar of my shirt and said "by not sharing your life story you are being selfish!"

?Q4. What was the most challenging thing about writing this book?
Actually, it was sitting down long enough to write more than one sentence. Where to start, how to bring interesting facts together without losing momentum of the overall story and then ending it satisfactorily.

?

Q5.? What are your interests when you are not writing?
Retirement has given me time to devote to other passions like oil painting, training for ultra distance running and motivational speaking.

?

Q6. Describe how you felt when you first saw a copy of your published book?
"Wow, I did that!" A great sense of achievement, because I am a do-ER rather than someone who would ever find time to sit down and write anything.

?

Q7. What is the first thing you did to promote your book immediately after it was published and what are you currently doing to promote your book?
I emailed all my friends, set up my own - long overdue website and contacted the local press/radio. Media attention with my latest running challenge also mentioned the book.

?

Q8. If you had to pick just one book marketing tool that you've used to promote your book, which would you say has been the most effective?
The media picked up on my running challenges and advertised the book at the same time, reaching an already interested audience.

?

Q9. Do you do more promoting online or offline and which do you prefer?
Probably more Internet via Facebook and traffic through my website.

?

Q10. Who will this book appeal to, what is its target audience?
All ages in the boxing, running, fitness and inspirational market.

?

Q11. What would you like people to take away from reading your book?
To motivate one person enough to take on a challenge they only ever dreamt about doing. We are generally afraid of having a go because of the fear of failure.

?

Q12. Are you concerned about the effect of e-publishing on traditional books?
We must be prepared to move with the times and trends. I try not to be an old dinosaur.

?

Q13. What kinds of feedback have you received from your readers?
I have had incredibly encouraging feedback from people from all walks of life. It's inspiring just to think that my book has inspired so many others.

Wind in the willows boosts biofuel production

Wind in the willows boosts biofuel production [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 20-Jan-2013

Imperial College London

Willow trees cultivated for 'green energy' can yield up to five times more biofuel if they grow diagonally, compared with those that are allowed to grow naturally up towards the sky.

This effect had been observed in the wild and in plantations around the UK, but scientists were previously unable to explain why some willows produced more biofuel than others.

Now British researchers have identified a genetic trait that causes this effect and is activated in some trees when they sense they are at an angle, such as where they are blown sideways in windy conditions.

The effect creates an excess of strengthening sugar molecules in the willows' stems, which attempt to straighten the plant upwards. These high-energy sugars are fermented into biofuels when the trees are harvested in a process that currently needs to be more efficient before it can rival the production of fossil fuels.

Willow is cultivated widely across the UK, destined to become biofuels for motor vehicles, heating systems and industry. The researchers say that in the future all willow crops could be bred for this genetic trait, making them a more productive and greener energy source.

The study was led by Dr Nicholas Brereton and Dr Michael Ray, both from the Department of Life Sciences at Imperial College London, who worked with researchers at Rothamsted Research, and the University of the Highlands and Islands' Agronomy Institute (at Orkney College UHI). The study is published in the journal Biotechnology for Biofuels.

Dr Brereton said: "We've known for some time that environmental stresses can cause trees to naturally develop a slightly modified 'reaction wood' and that it can be easier to release sugars from this wood. This is an important breakthrough, our study now shows that natural genetic variations are responsible for these differences and this could well be the key to unlocking the future for sustainable bioenergy from willow."

The researchers conducted a trial in controlled laboratory conditions on a rooftop in central London at the Gro-dome facility at Imperial's South Kensington Campus. They cultivated some willows at an angle of 45 degrees, and looked for any genetic differences between these plants and those allowed to grow naturally straight upwards.

The team then looked for the same effect with willows growing in natural conditions on Orkney Island, off the northern-most coast of Scotland, where winds are regularly so strong that the trees are constantly bent over at severe angles. Their measurements confirmed that the willows here could release five times more sugar than identical trees grown in more sheltered conditions at Rothamsted Research in the south of the UK.

Dr Angela Karp at Rothamsted Research who leads the BBSRC-funded BSBEC-BioMASS project said "We are very excited about these results because they show that some willows respond more to environmental stresses, such as strong winds, by changing the composition of their wood in ways that are useful to us. As breeders this is good news because it means we could improve willow by selecting these types from the huge diversity in our collections".

This work forms part of the BBSRC Sustainable Bioenergy Centre (BSBEC) where it is linked with other programmes aimed at improving the conversion of biomass to fuels. Coupled with work at Rothamsted Research, where the National Willow Collection is held, the new results will help scientists to grow biofuel crops in climatically challenging conditions where the options for growing food crops are limited, therefore minimising conflicts of food versus fuel.

###

Willows

Traditionally grown for wicker furniture and baskets, and an ancient medicinal plant whose chemical contents were the precursors to Aspirin, willows (Salix sp.) are now seen as important crops for energy and the environment. Willow requires less than a tenth of the fertiliser used for most cereal crops, and its shoots re-grow quickly after they are harvested. Environmental groups also say that willow plantations are also attractive to a variety of wildlife, making a positive impact on local biodiversity.

Taft Union officials release statement; Stan Lee reaches out to injured student

Taft Union High School?s interim superintendent released a statement Thursday addressing last week?s shooting and the ongoing rumors about past incidents involving suspect Bryan Oliver.

Some parents and students have said Oliver was suspended last year for creating a hit list of students he was targeting, but those allegations have not been confirmed by either authorities or school officials. The superintendent, William McDermott, said he understands the community?s desire for information.

?We are fully cooperating with law enforcement, including providing them with information relevant to last week?s event,??he said.
McDermott added that information maintained by the school district is confidential and protected from public disclosure under state and federal law. He said student information will be kept confidential even under the present circumstances.

McDermott?s statement is the first lengthy response from a school official since the Jan. 10 shooting.

Other points McDermott made include the following:

? The district is reviewing the incident to see what lessons can be learned, including working closely with law enforcement, mental health professionals, parents and local officials to create a safe working and learning environment.

? The district has taken steps for the protection and safety of students and staff, and is focused on providing support now that classes have resumed. Counseling services are still available.

? Community forums will be held regarding the shooting and the issues and concerns it?s raised. Information about the forums will be posted on the district?s website and at the school.

? Missed athletic events are being rescheduled.

Oliver, 16, entered a classroom and shot student Bowe Cleveland, law enforcement authorities have said. Cleveland has since been in critical condition at Kern Medical Center after undergoing surgery.

KMC officials said Thursday they would no longer release updates about Cleveland?s condition, nor confirm that he was even at the hospital.

Comic book legend sends injured student a message

Friends have taken to calling Cleveland, a comic book aficionado, ?Bulletproof Spider-Man.? They began an online campaign to get comic book legend Stan Lee, creator of Spider-Man and dozens of other comic book superheroes, to contact Cleveland.

Lee responded with a video message for the injured teen, wishing him a swift recovery.

?You know, I've been told that you're a big fan of mine and I want you to know that means a lot to me,??Lee says in the video. ?So I'm sending you this message to let you know my thoughts and prayers are with you, as are the thoughts and prayers of all of Marveldom assembled, as well as the brave Brigadiers of POW!?

The 90-year-old Lee said he?s sending Cleveland autographed posters and comic books for the teen to read as he recovers.

Authorities have said Oliver entered a classroom and shot Cleveland and fired at but missed student Jacob Nichols in an incident that quickly made international news as it was the first school shooting following the massacre at Sandy Hook. Cleveland suffered injuries to his abdomen and chest.

Shotgun pellets grazed teacher Ryan Heber, who, along with campus supervisor Kim Fields, convinced Oliver to drop the gun, authorities said. Oliver was arrested and charged with two counts of attempted murder and three counts of assault with a gun on a person, and has pleaded not guilty.

He?s being held on $1.5 million bail.

A probable cause declaration filed in court says Oliver admitted to targeting Cleveland and Nichols because they bullied him.

Classes at Taft resumed Tuesday, with heavy security as well as local military veterans patrolling the grounds of area schools.

Effective Workout To Build Lean MuscleWhile it is important to build muscle mass, it is highly recommended that you build lean muscle tissue i.e. without any excess fat. Although diet plays an important role in promoting lean muscle gains, the correct exercise plan needs to be followed to see results. Before beginning any training program, it is highly recommended that you seek your doctor?s approval.

In addition to that, it is advisable that you follow the correct diet that rich in protein, carbs, vitamins and minerals, as these kinds of workouts place great stress on the body. Given below is an effective workout plan for building lean muscle.

Workout Plan To Build Lean Muscles

Keep It Short

Most people who begin training with weights or other fitness equipment are often under the impression that more is better, which is an incorrect notion. You should train for a shorter period of time, with greater intensity.

If you increase the intensity of your workouts, you will experience greater fat loss. Fitness experts highly recommend that you perform 45-60 minutes of intense exercise three-five times a week for building lean muscle.

Incorporate Compound Movements

Compound movements are excellent for adding lean muscle mass. This is because compound movements utilize more than one muscle group at a time, which helps in increasing muscle size. In addition to that, compound exercises also help in decreasing fat, as they force the body to work harder.

Workout To Build Lean Muscle

However, it is important that you start performing compound exercises with light weight only, to prevent any injuries. The best compound exercises for building lean muscle include squat, bench press, shoulder press, bent-over rows, deadlift, and upright rows. Perform these exercises three-four times each week, as it will give your muscles enough time to recover.

Perform Exercises In A Circuit

Circuit training is one of the best ways to increase muscle as well as lose fat, hence, ideal for those who want to build lean muscle tissue. Circuit training involves performing a number of exercises in a circuit, without any rest. In simple terms, it means that if you want to perform 10 exercises, you would perform one set of each exercise without any rest, until the 10 exercises are over.

Build Lean Muscle

You could try doing two circuits in each workout, based on your fitness level. After each circuit, you should rest for at least 2 minutes, and drink enough water. Performing two circuits should take approximately 30-40 minutes to execute. It is important to note that you should perform circuit-training exercises only three-four times each week to prevent overtraining.

Perform High-Intensity Cardio

Individuals who desire to build lean muscle must incorporate high intensity cardio into their fitness regime. This is because?high-intensity cardio burns fat in a shorter span of time than low-intensity cardio. Common forms of high intensity cardio include running, jogging, rowing, and cycling.

You can perform high intensity cardio three-four times each week, to burn fat quickly. While performing high intensity cardio, it is advisable that you drink enough water, to prevent dehydration. High intensity cardio should be performed for 30 minutes each session to increase fat loss.

N.J. Ranks Low On Pet Ownership, Dogs & Cats | BizBlog ...

As a business writer, I get all sorts of press releases sent my way, and many of them have nothing to do with business. I?m going to blog about this one anyway, despite the admonitions of our Webmasters here at The Record.

I come from a family of animal lovers. My kin have had pets ranging from iguanas to three-legged box turtles roaming the house to every breed of dog and cat under the sun.

My sister is bucking the tide by owning Romeo, since New Jersey ranks 49th among the states in feline ownership.

So it was much to my surprise that I learned this week that New Jersey ranked only 48th, near the bottom of the 50-state barrel, for pet ownership in 2011.

Only 50.7 percent of Garden State residents have a pet, according to a press release from the American Veterinary Medical Association. The only states behind New Jersey in terms of pet ownership were New York, at 50.6 percent, and Massachusetts, at 50.4 percent.

The top pet-owning states were Vermont, where 70.8 percent of households have a pet, and New Mexico, with 67.6 percent owning pets.

And it?s not raining cats and dogs in our state.

New Jersey ranked in the bottom-10 states for dog ownership, at 32.4 percent. And the Garden State did even worse in the cat category, ranking 49th in the ownership of felines, at 25.3 percent, with only Utah behind us.

There must be a lesson here somewhere. But obviously, this survey didn?t query anyone in my clan.

Case in point: My sister?s Sphinx cat Romeo, seen here on Cinco de Mayo.

Natural methods help treat cancer-related fatigue

(NaturalNews) People who have been through cancer and its treatment experience difficulty with their recovery as they have to deal with severe, unbearable fatigue. Cancer fatigue is much different from the ordinary exhaustion which people feel after a busy day. With cancer fatigue, people feel tired in spite of a remarkable night's rest. Even gathering willpower to overcome it does not seem to help. Although the causes for cancer-related fatigue are many, its levels can differ from one person to another. Some common forms of fatigue experienced during this time are tiredness, weakness and exhaustion.1. Nutrition is the first step to wellness: A person wanting to tackle cancer-related fatigue has to eat a balanced and nutritious diet, rich in organic vegetables, limited fruits, legumes, nuts and healthy oils. It is imperative to drink plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration. Avoid excessive fruit juices as they contain sugar which feeds cancer. Having proper nutrition is needed not just for good health, but it is also required to ensure that the person receives ample proteins, calories and nourishment in order to maintain a healthy immune system. The Budwig protocol has been shown to be beneficial for cancer treatment and fatigue.

CoQ10, Nigella sativa, garlic, flax seeds (Budwig Protocol), green tea and acupuncture also have shown positive results with cancer-related fatigue. Vitamins C, D, E and A were seen to possibly aid in the recovery of fatigue, as reports show.

2. Studies have shown Ginseng is beneficial to cancer-related fatigue: Ginseng is an Oriental herb and is one of the best known herbal treatments used to deal with cancer-related fatigue. Using it daily helps to boost the person's energy and vitality, thus easing the recovery period. Well known as an herb tonic both in the West and the East, Ginseng is readily available and is known to build strength and stamina.

3. Massage therapy to fight fatigue caused by cancer: Massage therapy is another proven way to tackle fatigue. When carried out by a professional therapist, it is known to provide relief during the treatment process and also lessen symptoms like depression and nausea. Patients coping with breast cancer, ovarian cancer, and mesothelioma cancer are known to find relief with massage therapy.

4. Exercising and staying active help to treat fatigue: Moderate and regular exercises like walking and rebounding are known to be good ways to ease cancer-related fatigue. Cancer has been shown to be improved greatly with the addition of a moderate exercise program. People who are very weak should start out slow and increase as their energy allows. Over exertion is not good either.

5. Tackling cancer fatigue through rest: Rest is an important factor to overcome fatigue caused by cancer. Interrupted sleep or insomnia can result in immense weakness during the cancer patient's waking hours. Getting good quality and adequate rest will ensure lower levels of fatigue during these trying times. Moreover good sleep guarantees better control over negative emotions like anxiety, depression and stress.

6. Dealing with cancer fatigue through stress management: Even in ordinary circumstances, stress is known to drain people's energy. For a person undergoing cancer treatment, it is necessary to find ways to relieve stress. For many it can be through yoga, meditation or prayer, while for others walking in a park, reading or listening to music can bring some relief.

Justin Bieber pummeled his ex-bodyguard, lawsuit claims

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - Justin Bieber is apparently as adept at delivering hits behind the scenes as well as on the music charts. That is, if the allegations in a new lawsuit are to be believed.

In a suit filed in Los Angeles Superior Court on Thursday, Moshe Benabou, who claims to be Bieber's former bodyguard, claims that he was repeatedly punched by the "Boyfriend" singer, who then fired him.

And then, to add insult to injury, Benabou was denied overtime pay, vacation pay and reimbursement for expenses, the suit also alleges.

Benabou says that he worked for Bieber from March 2011 until October 2012, often working seven days a week and for 14 to 18 hours each day.

That all came to an end on October 12, the lawsuit says, when Bieber "launched an abusive tirade against Moshe Benabou," apparently because the 19-year-old singer felt that his bodyguard was keeping a member of his entourage away from him.

According to the complaint, Bieber "repeatedly punched Moshe Benabou in the chest and upper body area." When Benabou turned to walk away following the alleged assault, the suit says, Bieber exclaimed, "You are fired!"

Bieber's manager has not yet responded to TheWrap's request for comment.

Benabou is also suing BT Touring, which hired him to guard Bieber, alleging that he was denied overtime and vacation pay, as well as expenses that he incurred as a result of doing his job.

The lawsuit also cites a section of California Labor Code stating that employers must pay an employee's wages for a period of up to 30 days until back wages are paid off in full or "an action is commenced."

In all, Benabou claims that he's owed "an aggregate amount exceeding $421,261." The suit is also seeking other unspecified damages, prejudgment interest, court costs and attorneys' fees.

Salaried worker on FMLA: How to pay half days? ? Business ...

Q. We have a salaried employee who needs to take FMLA leave. Some days off will be full days, so they would be unpaid (unless she has vacation or personal time). But how do we pay for the intermittent days on which she only takes a half day off?? ? Mary, Nebraska

A. Salaried employees are generally entitled to a full day?s pay for any work they perform that day, pursuant to the Fair Labor Standards Act?s salary pay requirement. How??ever, the FMLA provides an exception to that rule. If your em??ployee works half a day, the other half-day taken for FMLA leave can be unpaid, assuming she chooses not to use any vacation or personal time to make up the shortfall in pay.
