Bryan Cranston to direct episode of "Modern Family" (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES, Feb 8 (TheWrap.com) ? Bryan Cranston stars in and directs episodes of one of the best dramas on TV, and now he's directing an episode of one of TV's best comedies: an ABC rep confirms to TheWrap that Cranston is directing an upcoming episode of "Modern Family."

The "Breaking Bad" and "Malcolm in the Middle" star's episode of "Modern Family" will air later this season, and the sitcom's cast has been tweeting photos from his time on the set. The photos reveal that he was among the victors in a Nerf War.

"Check out our new Nerf war recruit, @BryanCranston. We won!" tweeted "Family" star Nolan Gould. He appeared with Cranston and co-star Rico Rodriguez, all armed with their Nerf weaponry.

Eric Stonestreet, who played an exterminator in a season one episode of "Malcolm in the Middle," tweeted, "Bryan Cranston is directing Modern Family this week. One of my first gigs was Malcolm in the Middle. He was and is a gent of a guy."

"Family" star Julie Bowen tweeted a photo of herself with Cranston, along with a compliment courtesy of "Parks and Recreation": "Walter White directs Modern Family! Bryan Cranston is amazeballs .. I can't stop asking him about @breakingbad."

Meanwhile, Jesse Tyler Ferguson tweeted another photo of Cranston and Bowen, and made what seemed to be a "Breaking Bad" joke: "Here is @itsJulieBowen questioning our director Bryan Cranston's suggestion to steal a Mobile Home." (An RV converted into a mobile meth lab was a vital part of the AMC drama's early episodes.)

The photo -- possible spoiler alert -- is taken in the Claire and Phil Dunphy living room, which includes a "congratulations" banner and a bouquet of red, white and blue balloons. Could this mean Claire wins the town council election? (End possible spoiler alert.)

Cranston, a three-time Emmy winner for "Breaking Bad," will further seal his reputation as a jack-of-all-trades when he guest stars on the February 19 episode of "The Cleveland Show," playing an entertainment critic named Graham Kensington.

Star Wars Xbox Kinect bundle and game due April 3

Microsoft

By Matthew Hawkins

An official release date has finally been issued for the Xbox 360 Limited Edition Kinect Star Wars console and the "Kinect Star Wars" game, courtesy of Major Nelson, Microsoft's primary community liaison when it comes to all things Xbox. Both are due for arrival on April 3rd.

As you can see above, the console is molded after R2-D2, and the controller appears to be made out of C-3PO's spare parts. Meanwhile, the Kinect itself is just plain white, but looks very classy nonetheless. The game is included and the package will retail for $450.

New information regarding "Kinect Star Wars" itself has also been revealed. In addition to swinging one's arms around to weld a lightsaber against Darth Vader, use the Force against a Rancor, and pilot a Pod Racer, several other modes are also now known.

Added to the mix is the ability to control Speeder Bikes and Landspeeders, plus assorted other craft in space battles. One has to assume that an X-Wing will be selectable, unless said action only takes place during the prequel trilogy era.

And not only is there the chance to go toe to toe with Lord Vader, but Count Dooku as well. No word yet on Darth Maul, or better, yet, Boba Fett, but fingers crossed.

Though most intriguing of all is the new "Galactic Dance Off" mode, in which you can cut a rug in Jabba's palace as Slave Princess Leia:

Microsoft

But if you're a guy, and being a digital version of a scantily clad Carrie Fisher is not your idea of a good time, how about C-3PO, looking for more limber than he ever did in the movies?

Microsoft

Is the above a simple cash grab, going after fans of by far the most successful franchise for the Kinect, "Dance Central," or just a natural extension of the license, given the tech that's being used? You be the judge.

The game is included in the aforementioned bundle, or is sold separately for $50.

Fitness centers, personal trainers big business in Central Texas

By Rebecca Rose

Killeen Daily Herald

Before dawn breaks in Killeen, the sound of pulsating music rises from a small storefront business on Elms Road.

Inside, a group of 20 men and women are dancing in unison, moving back and forth, as instructions reverberate from a loudspeaker: ?And left, and left and left ? and hold ? and two, three, four ? and right. Take it back!?

The rhythmic cheerleading comes from Jazzercise Killeen owner Michelle Fry as she leaps and glides on the riser in front of her regular 8 a.m. Thursday class.

Fry?s class isn?t the only one where clients are kicking up their heels to get fit. Physical fitness is a thriving business in the surrounding area, with large gyms and small-business owners competing for a share of the market.

Starting a gym or personal training business can be lucrative, but challenging, say top area fitness entrepreneurs. While options range from traditional group fitness classes to an array of new fads, ultimately for businesses to stay on top, it boils down to one factor ? getting results for clients.

It all starts with training the trainer.

Trainer certification

Simone Tucker is an adjunct professor at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor who teaches classes in kinesiology. She also runs a coaching business for runners and offers personal training and yoga to a select group of clients. Tucker said a spurt of weight loss after pregnancy helped introduce her to the world of physical fitness as an occupation.

?I joined a gym (to lose weight) and ended up teaching some step aerobics classes,? she said. ?It just snowballed from there.?

Tucker, who now holds a master?s degree in exercise and sports science, said one of the most important parts of the process of starting a business is education, and ultimately, accreditation.

Since the state of Texas does not require personal trainers to be licensed, it?s up to the individual trainer to seek out certification and other training.

?You can call yourself a personal trainer today and market yourself as one,? said Tucker. ?However, you do want to be certified, so you don?t end up causing injury to a client, or worse.?

The National Association for Sports Medicine and the American Council on Exercise are among the top organizations offering accreditation in fitness. Certification programs guide trainers through a wide range of topics, including anatomy, physiology, kinesiology and other exercise and wellness related topics.

?They make sure trainers understand how the human body works, to learn about proper exercise executions, and proper form,? said Tucker.

Certification from national organizations can cost $300 to $600, depending on the type of course, an investment that could pay off big for trainers in the long run.

Personal sessions

Nancy Machado, a former professional body builder and owner of Muscles Machado in Killeen, offers one-on-one personal training sessions, as well as a comprehensive boot camp for clients. Machado, who is ACE certified, said she spent a long time researching which organization would be best for accreditation.

?We?re a military family, we move all over the place,? she said. ?I wanted something that I can take with me wherever I go.?

Through ACE, Machado is a certified personal trainer.

In addition, she holds a second certification as a health and fitness specialist, trained to work with clients with special conditions such as cancer, diabetes, heart disease and others.

Her initial study course lasted more than six months.

?It was very challenging,? she said. ?It?s an intensive study of kinesiology, physiology, body mechanics ? everything involved in being a personal trainer.?

For Machado, the idea of marrying her love of physical fitness with a business came from a desire to help people, an important aspect of maintaining a successful business.

?I enjoy the opportunity to help people better themselves,? she explained. ?I started this because I wanted to help others achieve their goals.?

Fitness craze

And entrepreneurs are finding success with partnerships and franchisers of other national programs.

Richard Vincent has been a co-owner of CrossFit CenTex in Belton since its opening in December 2008. CrossFit CenTex is part of a partnership with the national fitness brand, which combines weightlifting, sprinting and gymnastics.

What started as an Internet phenomenon featuring extreme weightlifting videos on YouTube, CrossFit is now a bonafide national fitness craze.

Vincent said workout arenas like CrossFit CenTex are dubbed ?boxes? due to their lack of mirrors and machines. Workout philosophies focus on physical ability, not physical appearance.

?What we care about is not what you look like, but what you can do with that body,? he said. ?If we train you like an athlete ? you will look like an athlete.?

From a business standpoint, Vincent said boxes market to customers looking for more than a place for a quick workout.

?We don?t compete on price that way,? he explained. ?We?re personal training in a group setting.?

Vincent said the desire for workout enthusiasts to get the most out of their dollar is driving a switch to more community-based, intimate arenas.

At locally-owned Heritage Park Fitness in Harker Heights, trainer Sasha Brainerd agreed.

?The biggest advantage here is the intimacy,? said Brainerd.

?Most chains are bigger. They?re membership-driven, not so much person-driven,? she said. ?That?s what we can offer from being a small facility. We can tell people we?re never over-crowded.?

Word of mouth

Fry started Jazzercise Killeen in 2000, teaching classes out of a room at the Killeen Community Center. The aerobics dance studio now operates out of a studio on Elms Road, after what Fry called a long period of growth and expansion for the business.

As a franchisee of the national fitness chain, Fry and other instructors are certified through Jazzercise?s training programs. Additionally, the corporate wing offers marketing and advertising support, a valuable benefit to a growing business.

To grow her client base, Fry said she opts for a layered approach to marketing, with newspaper, radio and television advertising, which makes up the majority of her investment outlay for the business.

?But by far, for us the best method is word of mouth,? said Fry, who pointed to other clients? success inspiring friends and family to join as well.

Machado and other trainers echoed her sentiment. Machado said she is routinely approached by new customers, intrigued by her success with others.

?You just start by working with someone in the gym,? said Machado. ?People see you, if you?re there consistently. They watch you. They see the client changing.?

But word of mouth ultimately still relies on results, trainers say.

?If you get results, you?re going to continue to see people,? said Brainerd.

Tips to pick a fitness program

For consumers, selecting the right type of program depends on individual tastes and goals. Programs are tailored to different personality types, and may not work for every person across the board.

Personal trainer Simone Tucker said consumers should be cautious when selecting a trainer or a particular program.

?If you are looking for a trainer, make sure they are certified with a reputable organization,? she said.

Most importantly, a trainer or fitness coach should be flexible, and understand the needs of his or her client. ?Make sure that the person is really listening to you, goals and needs,? she advised. ?Make sure they can work around your needs with your family and kids. We all have different challenges.?

Consumers should all start with setting a reasonable goal for themselves, whether its weight loss, completing a marathon, or gaining body strength, said Tucker.

?Set goals for yourself, making sure they are reasonable and achievable,? she said.

Tucker said the best advice is to avoid committing to a program that?s too ambitious, or out of one?s budget range.

?If you feel like you are being pushed into something you can?t afford, then you probably should just say no,? she said.

Cannon says he is completely healthy after illness (AP)

INDIANAPOLIS ? What do you do after?recovering from a?serious illness? If you're Nick Cannon, you celebrate by attending the Super Bowl.

The entertainer was?hospitalized last month after suffering from a form of mild kidney failure, but he says he is now fully healed.

"This is a great place to get back and debut the healthy Nick," he said on Sunday during a break as the host of NBC's pre-show. "Everybody's out here having a good time, and you know people were worried like, `Is he going to be able to do the Super Bowl pre-show?' But I am 100 percent feeling good right now."

Cannon attributes his improved health to a change in diet, but says he does not eat the same food as wife Mariah Carey, who recently lost weight after giving birth to their twins Moroccan and Monroe.

"I used to be a fast-food junkie," Cannon explained. "She gets to have higher protein, which isn't fair because I love my steaks and I can't eat that anymore. Her carbs are lower so we are both on a diet, but it is different."

Cannon, who is a New York Giants fan, attended various events in the days leading up to the Super Bowl.

While his family was not with him, they were not far from his mind. When asked if he'd like to expand his brood one day, he laughed and said: "I would love to have more children. Now my wife on the other hand, I think the twins took a toll on her. She is like, `I ain't doing that again.'"

Report: Monti says Italy a "safe place"

US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton arrives at the Security Conference on Saturday, Feb. 4, 2012 in Munich, Germany. Politicians and military representatives will join for the 48. Munich Security conference from Friday, Feb. 3 until Sunday, Feb. 5, 2012.(AP Photo/Frank Augstein)

(AP) ? Italy is now a "safe place" amid market turbulence, Premier Mario Monti said in an interview published Saturday, pressing for Europe to turn its political energy to generating growth rather than further plans to strengthen budget discipline.

Monti's comments in an interview with the German daily Sueddeutsche Zeitung came ahead of a planned appearance at the Munich Security Conference.

The annual gathering of security officials is tinged this year by concern about the eurozone debt crisis and comes as negotiations over a second bailout for Greece drag on.

Monti was quoted as saying that "an uncontrolled Greek state bankruptcy would be bad for everyone" but officials will avoid it. "Nevertheless, I think Italy is now a safe place."

Monti's government has been trying to regain investor confidence by cutting public spending and reforming a sluggish economy. Italy's struggle with high borrowing costs is a cause for concern because the country is considered too big to rescue if it gets into deeper trouble.

Efforts to get a grip on the eurozone debt crisis, which to a large extent have been shaped by Germany, have drawn criticism for focusing on austerity rather than growth. Most European Union leaders agreed last Monday on a German-pushed pact to strengthen budget discipline.

"These budget rules have permeated every cell of the European body," Monti was quoted as saying. "The problem is off the table."

"Political energy should not be wasted now on particularly original ideas for budget discipline, but (used) for a growth policy," he added, according to the report. He said that markets are more and more looking not just at deficit-cutting efforts but also at economic growth.

As well as opposing jointly issued debt, or eurobonds, Germany has been holding out against pressure to increase the eurozone's permanent rescue fund, the euro500 billion ($650 billion) European Stability Mechanism, which is to start work in July. It has pointed to plans to review the fund's size in March.

Monti was quoted as saying that March is coming soon, so Europe can be "relatively relaxed" about waiting to reassess the size.

Speaking at the Munich conference, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said that "security and prosperity are ultimately inseparable," adding her voice to calls for Europe to generate growth.

"We need a common agenda for economic recovery and growth that is every bit as compelling as our global security cooperation," she said.

"We remain confident that Europe has the will and the means not only to cut your debt and build the necessary firewalls, but also to create growth, to restore liquidity and market confidence," she told delegates.

"As Europe emerges from economic crisis, we have to work harder to reinforce each other's recoveries," Clinton said. "We know we have a ways to go as well."

The European Parliament's new president, Martin Schulz, criticized a "one-sided fixation on budget cuts" in remarks on the conference's sidelines.

"We urgently need investment" in Greece, said Schulz, a member of Germany's opposition Social Democrats. "The money is there, and the fact it is not done is based on, I think, ideological and not pragmatic reasons."
