Romney eager to shift focus to Obama

A political tip sheet for the rest of us outside the Washington Beltway, for Tuesday, April 3:

WHAT'S HAPPENING

ROMNEY EAGER TO FOCUS ON OBAMA: Republican front-runner Mitt Romney is eager to shift his campaign's focus to the general election campaign against President Barack Obama. Never mind that voters were going to the polls for GOP contests Tuesday in Wisconsin, Maryland and the District of Columbia. Romney, who has an overwhelming lead in the delegate count, said Obama "gets full credit or blame" for the economy, previewing a look-ahead line of attack. Romney's message served double duty as a subtle push to trailing rival Rick Santorum, who has pledged to continue campaigning against Romney until the front-runner has won the presidential nomination. "The right thing for us, I think, is to get a nominee as soon as we can and be able to focus on Barack Obama," Romney said in an interview with Fox News. "You have to remember that it was Ross Perot that allowed Bill Clinton to win." Perot ran as an independent in the 1992 general election, when Clinton defeated President George H.W. Bush. At the same time, Romney and Obama are trading jabs and acting as though the fall campaign is all but set, though Romney suddenly faces a better organized, better financed campaign backed by the power of the presidency.

OBAMA SAYS GOP WOULD NOT BACK REAGAN: President Barack Obama says even the "Gipper" would have trouble succeeding in this very conservative Republican Party. Obama said Republicans want to force a "radical vision" on the nation, accusing the opposition party of moving so far to the right that even one of its beloved figures, Ronald Reagan, could not win a GOP presidential primary. Obama sought to present himself to voters as the protector of the middle class and the leader of a Democratic Party that is willing to compromise in Washington. He singled out Mitt Romney for criticism and more broadly said Republicans had shifted from any reasonable debate on health care, debt reduction and the environment. Republicans "will brook no compromise," Obama told news executives at the annual meeting of The Associated Press. He cited a Republican presidential debate late last year when the entire field rejected the prospect of $10 in spending cuts for every $1 in tax increases as a means to lower the debt. Republicans called Obama's remarks a partisan attempt to cover up broken pledges to cut the federal deficit in half, curb spending and make tough choices to reform Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid.

OBAMA'S BID TO LINK ROMNEY TO BIG OIL: A new ad by the Obama campaign goes after Mitt Romney as a candidate backed by "Big Oil." This ad from President Barack Obama's re-election campaign features a narrator saying that under Obama domestic oil production is at an 8-year high. "So why is Big Oil attacking him?" asks the narrator. Obama's face fills a TV screen behind the words "Big Oil Attack Ad." The narrator goes on to say, "Because he's fighting to end their tax breaks." The ad is airing in several swing states. Obama's ad attempts to take the initiative in the campaign debate over rising gas prices and is also a response to a recent $3.6 million ad buy by an outside group assailing Obama's energy record, blaming him for gas prices and his decision to delay the Keystone XL pipeline project. Gas prices promise to be a major campaign issue, and Republicans want to tap into voter frustration by blaming Obama for policies they claim are restricting U.S. oil production and pushing up energy costs.

PALIN, COURIC IN A BIT OF 2008 NOSTALGIA: Sarah Palin was the much-hyped guest co-host on NBC's "Today," going head-to-head against former "Today" anchor Katie Couric, who this week is subbing on "Good Morning America" at her current workplace, ABC. Host Matt Lauer joked that as part of the "Today" team, Palin was briefly including herself in the "lamestream media" she often rails about. But Couric, with whom Palin has a particular beef after a bruising 2008 interview as the GOP vice presidential candidate, went unmentioned. The closest reference to that face-off, which took place when Couric anchored the "CBS Evening News": Palin was first glimpsed Tuesday on the "Today" couch with her face buried in newspapers. It was a good-sport nod to an embarrassing moment from the Couric interview, when Palin couldn't name any newspapers she regularly read, instead replying that she read "all of them, any of them that have been in front of me over all these years."

GALLUP NATIONAL TRACKING POLL

The Gallup national tracking poll out Tuesday shows Mitt Romney maintaining a healthy lead over Rick Santorum and his other rivals.

Mitt Romney ? 41 percent

Rick Santorum ? 25 percent

Newt Gingrich ? 12 percent

Ron Paul ? 11 percent

NEXT CONTESTS: After Tuesday, voting in the Republican presidential race goes on spring break, taking a pause for three weeks and giving the candidates a chance to exhale, raise money, reassess strategy and, perhaps, even spend quality time with family. The contest will resume April 24 when five Northeastern states hold primaries: Connecticut, Delaware, New York, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island.

WHERE THEY'LL BE WEDNESDAY:

? Gingrich: North Carolina

? Paul: California

? Romney: Washington, D.C., Pennsylvania

? Santorum: Pennsylvania

IN THEIR WORDS:

? "He said that he's 'very supportive' of this new budget, and he even called it 'marvelous,' which is a word you don't often hear when it comes to describing a budget. It's a word you don't often hear generally." ? Obama, on Romney's support for the budget plan by Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wis.

? "I think it'd be marvelous if the Senate were to pick up Paul Ryan's budget and to adopt it and pass it along to the president." ? Romney, in a telephone town hall meeting last week with Wisconsin voters.

? "It's kind of the least of the worst, I guess. I did vote for Obama. But ... I think it's time for a change." ? Michelle Mueller of Brookfield, Wis., explaining her vote for Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minn., who dropped out of the race in January.

? "I have yet to find an honest politician who'll do what he says he'll do. That includes Mitt Romney. ... I'm mad at this country. I'm mad at our politicians." ? Rick Defenbaugh of Sun Prairie, Wis., explaining his vote for Romney as more of a protest against Obama.

? "Ronald Reagan, who as I recall was not accused of being a tax-and-spend socialist, understood repeatedly that when the deficit started to get out of control that for him to make a deal he would have to propose both spending cuts and tax increases. He did it multiple times. He could not get through a Republican primary today." ? President Barack Obama, in a speech to news executives at the annual meeting of The Associated Press.

(AP) ? Well-traveled routes that serve as Wisconsin's vital arteries also provide a window into the competing hopes for Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum.

Romney can roll up a solid win in Tuesday's presidential primary with a strong showing along the state's east-west Interstate 94, which bisects Milwaukee's GOP-rich western suburbs.

Santorum's fading hopes rest on swamping Romney in cities and towns along north-south Interstate 43, which lead from Milwaukee north through the industrial and blue-collar base of the Fox River Valley.

Wisconsin elections officials are projecting 35 percent of Wisconsin's 4.35 million eligible voters will participate in Tuesday's primary. A large majority of the vote will come from Wisconsin's metropolitan southeast corner and industrial Fox Valley north to Green Bay.

"While you might achieve a victory margin in other places around the state, the percent contribution to the total vote goal, there's just not a lot of numbers there," said Brandon Scholz, a consultant and former executive director of the state Republican Party.

The dynamic favors Romney, whose appeal in the suburbs in Michigan, Ohio and Illinois helped him win those Midwestern primaries this year. Meanwhile, Santorum, who had campaigned aggressively last week in less populous northern and western Wisconsin, planned to return to his home state, Pennsylvania, Monday, all but conceding the state where Romney leads in polls.

Stretches of both I-94 and I-43 also promise to be key general election battlegrounds. The four congressional districts that cover them are represented by Republicans in Congress. Democrat Barack Obama carried the districts narrowly in winning the state easily in 2008, while George W. Bush carried them more easily in his narrow loss of the state in his 2004 re-election bid.

More than Romney, Santorum has ventured away from the suburbs nearest Milwaukee. He was heavily working the upper stretch of the I-43 corridor Sunday, with stops in seven cities including Green Bay, Appleton and Oshkosh.

The former Pennsylvania senator who represented the Pittsburgh area in the U.S. House before that was working hard to come off as a common man. He tossed a few frames at local bowling alleys, swilled beer and stopped in at a Friday night fish fry, a tradition in restaurants and taverns all over the state.

And he's talked a lot about his "Made in America" ideas for reviving the nation's manufacturing sector, which would seem to resonate in a state that's home to motorcycle maker Harley-Davidson's headquarters, plumbing fixture company Kohler and Mercury Marine outboard motors, and dozens of other high-skill, precision manufacturers.

The Fox Valley also is home to the highest concentration of the world's paper manufacturing, good for 10 percent of the employment in and around 16 cities along the river, including Appleton. This blue-collar influence mixes with a conservative evangelical element evident in the anti-abortion billboards that mark the I-43 corridor.

But interviews with voters in these pockets revealed doubts about whether it's paying off in a nomination race Republicans are increasingly interested in winding down and setting up the battle with Democratic President Barack Obama.

Retired sales executive Tom Siewert of Fond du Lac said he's voting for Romney because he thinks it's time for Republicans to focus on November even if it's not the ideal pick for the party. And despite his effort to portray himself as the outsider against the well-funded establishment Republican Romney, Santorum's Washington past is a liability for some voters.

"Senator Santorum is no saint. Nobody is. You spend five, 10, 15 years of your life in politics and you're going to do some things that are not going to look too good to people," Siewert said.

Mary Draheim of Plymouth ? halfway between Green Bay and Milwaukee on I-43 ? supports Santorum and is bothered by what she calls the GOP establishment's rush to nominate Romney. She calls him the "godfather" of the health care bill Obama signed in 2010.

Impressed by what she describes as Santorum's moral convictions, Draheim said: "I'd rather have him than Romney."

Romney and a pro-Romney political action committee are heavily outspending Santorum and his allies in television advertising, especially in the Milwaukee market.

Still, Santorum drew Laurie Stevens and five of her nine children to a small rally outside his state campaign headquarters in the near-west Milwaukee suburb of Brookfield Saturday.

Stevens is among the heavy pocket of evangelicals in the Milwaukee area Santorum can count on Tuesday. "He stands for what I believe," Stevens said. Of his long odds, she added: "I believe in the power of prayer."

And while I- 94 runs through Waukesha County, home of the state's largest evangelical Christian mega-church, Romney is poised to do better in what has become a heavily suburban county and one of the most GOP-rich tracts in the nation. George W. Bush carried Wisconsin's 5th Congressional District, held for decades by Waukesha County conservative Jim Sensenbrenner, with a whopping 63 percent of the vote in 2004.

Westward residential expansion of the metro area has transformed hundreds of square miles of dairy farms and hayfields into a booming residential area heavily populated by Republicans, including young professionals and retirees.

And Waukesha County has a recent pragmatic hue. In 2008, Republican John McCain collected almost 63 percent in the county, double the more conservative Mike Huckabee's total.

"This primary is about beating Barack Obama," said John Kleczka, a retired accountant and Brookfield Republican who ventured a few blocks east to Milwaukee Friday to see Romney in the iconic Serb Hall Friday night. "It's time to stand by Romney. He can win and do the job."

Longtime Waukesha County GOP activist Edythe Cooper is backing Romney because but she wants the front-runner to end the primary campaign now.

"I don't want any more of this squabbling. I don't want any more of the throat-cutting. If we don't unite, we're not going to win," Cooper said.

Romney has hammered a southern ellipse from Milwaukee west to the suburbs of Democrat-heavy Madison, although he did campaign in the Fox Valley's Appleton Friday.

As he has in other Midwestern states, Romney has spent less time with the grass roots and more time courting GOP establishment figures. True to form, he nabbed the backing Friday of Rep. Paul Ryan.

The congressman is a rising national star. But his district also covers the southeastern corner of the state and catches the southern half of Waukesha County, including the bedroom community Mukwonago.

As traffic whizzed past on I-94 outside a Pewaukee hotel, Ryan introduced Romney to an audience of more than 1,000 conservative activists Saturday, sparking louder cheers than either Romney or Santorum, who addressed the forum later.

Pewaukee Republican Patricia Funk walked away from the forum conflicted. "I'm torn, but I'm leaning toward Romney," the retired factory worker said. ""We can fight over values, or we can try to win."

Are American Homes Shrinking? | Real Estate Communities

American Homes Getting SmallerHomebuyers are becoming concerned about the housing market, and how it will look in the coming years. Moreover, people are becoming anxious about the downsizing of single family homes and abnormal drops in square footage. ?According to a survey conducted by the National Association of Homebuilders, by 2015 the average percentage of square footage for single family housing will decrease by 10%. Though this may sound like a negative thing, we take a closer look at how these smaller homes are gaining votes for their awesome new features. The infographic below explains what the projected housing plans will be for single family homes in the next couple of years.

National Association of Homebuilders Survey Results

  • 74% believe that single family homes will get smaller
  • 68% believe that homes will have more ?green? features
  • 29% believe that newer single family homes will have more technological features

The New Home in 2015

One of the new features of a single family home is the programmable Thermostat. This new feature offers homebuyers the chance to control the temperatures in certain rooms than otherwise having to choose one temperature for the entire house. Other new amenities include energy-efficient certified electricity, first floor master bedrooms with walk-in closets, and combined kitchen, living room, and family rooms for easier access. According to the infographic, by the year 2015, the average single family home is expected to be 2,152 square feet. Of that number, 74% of the people surveyed believe that single family homes will become smaller within the next five years and a whopping 68% also believe that single family homes will be a lot more energy-efficient as well.

With the above information, some people believe that these numbers aren?t accurate, about 63% of the builders? surveyed think that the average house in 2015 will have a square footage of between 2000 ? 2399 sq. feet.

Would you mind if your home was a bit smaller, but included some smarter features? We would love to hear from you about this issue in our comments section below.

VelaTel Global Communications (OTCQB: VELA), a leader in deploying and operating wireless broadband and telecommunication networks worldwide, is pleased to announce that it has reached a major milestone by closing its acquisition of Herlong Investments Limited and its operating subsidiaries, Novi-Net and Montenegro Connect. The acquisition provides VelaTel a low cost entry into the geographic center of the Balkan countries and leads to other opportunities in the region. VelaTel is on track with its projected timeline to begin deployment of both networks during Q2 2012.

VelaTel closed the acquisition by paying 500,000 Euros along with credit for $1,000,000 of equipment down payment deposit VelaTel has made to its preferred equipment vendor ZTE Corporation.? The closing proceeds will be used for deployment and expansion of Novi-Net?s and Montenegro Connects? wireless broadband networks. ?Closing this acquisition allows VelaTel to report the financial results of these subsidiaries on its consolidated financial statements, including more than $1,000,000 existing annualized revenue of Novi-Net.

Novi-Net holds a nationwide license for 42 MHz in the 3.5 GHz bandwidth to provide wireless broadband access (WBA) in the Republic of Croatia. Novi-Net currently owns a data center, a network core and 11 base transceiver stations (BTS) that provide WBA and its related services to more than 1,500 existing subscribers in five counties in northern Croatia. VelaTel?s planned expansion of this network will include Croatia?s capital city Zagreb and its 1,000,000 population.

Montenegro Connect also holds a 42 MHz nationwide license in the 3.5 GHz bandwidth in Montenegro. Montenegro?s year round population stands at 666,000, but it enjoys over 1 million affluent tourist visitors per year. Montenegro Connect is currently a ?greenfield? operation with two BTS installed for testing purposes.? VelaTel?s Phase 1 deployment of this network will include Montenegro?s capital city Podgorica and its 150,000 inhabitants.

VelaTel is in the final stages of negotiation with ZTE for the balance of equipment and services associated with the first phase of deployment.
