PFT: Newton fined $21K for bumping official

Perry FewellAP

It?s obvious the Giants defense isn?t what it once was.

But if you ask their defensive coordinator why, he makes it clear it?s not the coaching.

?We?ve prepared better than what we?ve played,? Perry Fewell said, via Ralph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News. ?I think if you look at the tape we?re in position to make plays. We haven?t made plays.?

While coaches default into self-preservation mode this time of year, it?s hard to pin the blame for the Giants? precipitous slide on one man.

They were seventh in the league in total defense in 2010, and won a Super Bowl a year ago. This year, they?re 30th in total defense.

But mostly, they?ve been awful when it counted most, allowing 67 points in their last two must-win games, which leaves them only a slim conditional chance at the playoffs heading into the final weekend.

?We?ve been in position,? Fewell said. ?We haven?t made a football play for the last couple of weeks. We?ve been in position to make football plays, but it hasn?t gone our way.?

If there?s a sign that players know Fewell?s right, it?s that there?s no open or indirect grumbling about him yet.

?We won a Super Bowl in this system ? I think that?s the main thing,? linebacker Mathias Kiwanuka said. ?We had the same system that we did last year.?

?There?s a lot of support for Perry,? defensive end Osi Umenyiora added. ?I?ll just say that.?

Of course, the Giants were trending this direction defensively last year, finishing 27th in the league. But their play late in the year was much of the reason they won a title, so that fades from memory. That?s added some insulation for Fewell, and any offseason changes should rightly begin with personnel.

He?s had chances to interview for head coaching jobs in the past (and the Panthers may have made a significant mistake picking Ron Rivera over him), and will likely continue to. But until he gets one of those jobs, he?s left trying to scheme for an aging cast which needs a re-tooling.

Back to the drawing board for property tax - Cyprus Mail

THE GOVERNMENT has backed down from its intention to update immovable property prices by applying a formula that stakeholders had said would hike up taxes many times over and would drive the economy deeper into recession.?

The House plenum is due to discuss an amended bill on January 17 that will remove a provision to update property prices, which was part of the preliminary agreement between Cyprus and its international lenders.?

Interior Minister Eleni Mavrou said that the bill would not now update property values using the consumer price index (CPI) over 1980 to 2012.

?We?re going back to the 1980 values,? Mavrou said referring to the way immovable property tax is currently calculated, which is on the property?s value on January 1, 1980.

Lawmakers recently discussed, but postponed voting on, a previous bill that was going to update the values to 2012.?

Hotels said that would increase by nine times the amount of tax a hotel would have to pay, and stakeholders and lawmakers asked the government to amend the bill.

?It now seems that the amount that we must aim for is significantly lower than the ?180 million we were discussing,? Mavrou said.

She said that the terms of the amended bill are under discussion with Cyprus? lenders and the finance ministry to clarify how much the government should aim to receive in taxes, though she added the figure might be somewhere over ?60 million.?

It was not immediately clear if the tax rate for the value bands ? also subject to changes under the bills previous guise ? was part of discussions.?

But Mavrou said that ?the average household? would not be impacted as they fall under the tax threshold.?

The CPI provision had drawn a large reaction from landowners, property developers and hoteliers who said the changes would drive the economy deeper into recession.

Under the changes as they were tabled for discussion under the bailout agreement, ?the taxable figure ?levied on the total value of all properties in a person?s or company?s name ? would be the result of multiplying the 1980 value of the property by about 3.5.

A property worth ?170,000 in 1980 values would have risen to ?595,000 after multiplying it with the CPI. The chairman of property developers Pantelis Leptos said it was an unfair bill that would act as a deterrent for investment.

The hotels association PASYXE chairman, Haris Loizides, said that the bill as it stood increased the tax a hotel had to pay by nine times, which would have translated to a hotel that paid ?27,600 in IPT last year needing to pay ?253,380 in 2013.

(AP) ? With a yearend deadline looming before the economy goes over the so-called fiscal cliff, President Barack Obama is cutting short his traditional Christmas holiday in Hawaii, planning to leave for Washington on Wednesday evening.

Obama was expected to arrive in Washington early Thursday, the White House said late Tuesday. First lady Michelle Obama and the couple's two daughters are scheduled to remain in Hawaii until Jan. 6.

In the past, the president's end-of-the-year holiday in his native state had stretched into the new year. The first family left Washington last Friday night.

Congress was expected to return to Washington on Thursday. Before he departed for Hawaii, Obama told reporters he expected to be back in the capital this week.

Without action by Obama and Congress, automatic budget cuts and tax increases are set to begin in January, which many economists say could send the country back into recession. So far, the president and congressional Republicans have been unable to reach agreement on any alternatives.

Lawmakers have expressed little but pessimism for the prospect of an agreement coming before Jan. 1. On Sunday, Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, R-Texas, said she expects any action in the waning days of the year to be "a patch because in four days we can't solve everything."

With the collapse last week of House Speaker John Boehner's plan to allow tax rates to rise on million-dollar-plus incomes, lawmakers were increasingly worried that no deal can be reached.

They were already preparing their arguments about who is to blame if the new year comes without an agreement.

Obama already has scaled back his ambitions for a sweeping budget bargain. Before leaving the capital on Friday, he called for a limited measure that extends George W. Bush-era tax cuts for most people and staves off federal spending cuts.

The Obamas were spending the holiday at a rented home near Honolulu. On Christmas Day, the president and first lady visited with members of the military to express thanks for their service.

"One of my favorite things is always coming to base on Christmas Day just to meet you and say 'thank you,'" the president said at Marine Corps Base Hawaii's Anderson Hall. He said that being commander in chief was his greatest honor as president.

Obama took photos with individual service members and their families.

On Christmas Eve, Obama called members of the military to thank them for serving the nation, then joined his family for dinner, the White House said. The Obamas opened gifts Christmas morning, ate breakfast and sang carols.

Friends were joining the Obamas for Christmas dinner Tuesday night, the White House said.

Facebook Expands Photo Functionality In Its Desktop App; Quietly Rolls Out Drag To Upload Feature

Image (1) facebooklogo3.png for post 16204Facebook last week opened a new front in the so-called photo app wars with the launch of its ephemeral photo app Poke. But Facebook's focus on apps like Poke, Camera and Instagram doesn't mean that it is has stopped enhancing the photo experience on its main social networking platform. Facebook has now implemented a new "drag to upload" feature to allow users to add photos to their status updates more easily.

Too Much Uninformed Chatter About Firearms, Gun 'Control ...

Too Much Uninformed Chatter About Firearms, Gun ?Control?

?The beginning of wisdom is to call things by their right name.?

-Ancient Chinese proverb

On Saturday, I was watching FOX News when one of their liberal contributors, while talking about gun ?control,? mentioned ammunition clips and magazines. She proceeded to complain about people making such a big deal regarding the differences between the two, displaying an attitude of ?it doesn?t really matter.?

At which point I changed the TV channel.

Her ignorance regarding firearms is representative of what I?ve been witnessing in the gun ?control? conversation after the Newtown, Connecticut, mass shooting. While this lack of knowledge about guns and their so-called ?control? existed before, never have I?ve seen it so magnified to the degree it?s being displayed these days by politicians, journalists, bloggers, activists, Main Street, what have you.

Granted, a lot less Americans have grown up around guns than previous generations.

Still, pushing uniformed opinion as fact is inexcusable.

Which is why I?m going to suggest everyone who wishes to participate in the ongoing discussion about guns gets informed.

At risk of sounding like that talking head.

And subsequently getting tuned out by your audience.

This is what I recommend. First, learn as much as you can about firearms. There?s a lot of free, quality introductory material on these personal safety tools out there on the Internet. Query ?gun basics? in a search engine and see what turns up.

Second, download and read Gun Facts, a free firearm reference book by Guy Smith I first blogged about back in December 2010. Regularly-updated, it?s now on version 6.1. From their website:

Gun Facts is a free e-book that debunks common myths about gun control. It is intended as a reference guide for journalists, activists, politicians, and other people interested in restoring honesty to the debate about guns, crime, and the 2nd Amendment.

Gun Facts has 112 pages of information. Divided into chapters based on gun control topics (assault weapons, ballistic finger printing, firearm availability, etc.), finding information is quick and easy.

Any doubts over what?s presented in Gun Facts? Try and debunk what?s been claimed.

I wrote in that December 2010 post:

While researching personal safety issues, it?s amazing how often I see people put forth arguments about guns without knowing the facts (now that I think about it, this just doesn?t apply to firearms). I learned a long time ago that if you want others to take you seriously- you?ve got to know what you?re talking about.?

I still feel the same way more than two years later. It?s time to get serious and learn the facts if you haven?t done so already.

Being an uninformed fool is one thing. However, pulling stuff out of one?s butt doesn?t cut it in a discussion about firearms and gun ?control? where the implications of widely-disseminated misinformation can lead to future restrictions on a Constitutional right.

Gun Facts version 6.1 can be downloaded for free here.
