Hubble catches a streak of stars in side-on view of spiral galaxy

Feb. 10, 2013 ? The Hubble Space Telescope captured a thin, glittering streak of stars in a new view of the spiral galaxy ESO 121-6, which lies in the southern constellation of Pictor (The Painter's Easel).

Viewed almost exactly side-on, the intricate structure of the swirling arms is hidden, but the full length of the galaxy can be seen -- including the intense glow from the central bulge, a dense region of tightly packed young stars sitting at the center of the spiral arms.

Tendrils of dark dust can be seen across the frame, partially obscuring the bright center of the galaxy and continuing out towards the smattering of stars at its edges, where the dust lanes and shapes melt into the inky background. Numerous nearby stars and galaxies are visible as small smudges in the surrounding sky, and the brightest stars are dazzlingly prominent towards the bottom left of the image.

ESO 121-6 is a galaxy with patchy, loosely-wound arms and a relatively faint central bulge. It actually belongs to a group of galaxies, a clump of no more than 50 similar structures all loosely bound to one another by gravity. The Milky Way is also a member of a galactic group, known as the Local Group.

(AP) ? Veteran goalie Tim Thomas, who has said he won't play this season, was traded by the Boston Bruins to the New York Islanders on Thursday for a conditional second-round draft choice either next year or in 2015.

Thomas chose to take this season off following the NHL lockout and was suspended by the Bruins after he didn't report to training camp last month. The 38-year-old goalie is in the final season of a four-year deal that counts for $5 million against the salary cap.

The Islanders have plenty of room to fit Thomas' salary on their cap, and this deal provides financial flexibility for the Bruins. Boston was up against the upper salary limit of $70.2 million, with Thomas' salary factored in, and New York is only marginally above the minimum payroll of $44 million.

"We felt this would give us flexibility immediately. It was us being proactive," Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli said on a conference call. "I've had discussions on and off with the Islanders regarding this for a while. I don't really want to get into details. I think I've made it known publicly this was something we would like to try to do at some point."

NHL teams must be in full compliance of the salary cap by Friday, the 20th day of the league season. The Islanders will be even further above the cap floor with the imminent return of defenseman Lubomir Visnovsky, who reported to the club for the first time on Wednesday and then passed a physical on Thursday, which led to New York lifting its suspension and placing him on the active roster.

"We have acquired an asset for our organization," Islanders general manager Garth Snow said of Thomas. "This acquisition allows us flexibility with our roster moving forward."

Thomas is unlikely to play for the Islanders this season or in the future. New York already has veteran goalies Evgeni Nabokov and Rick DiPietro on its active roster.

Thomas' absence has created an opportunity for Tuukka Rask to lead the talented Bruins in net, and he's delivered. Rask is 6-1-1 with a 1.97 goals-against average for Boston, the top team in the Eastern Conference as play began on Thursday.

"Without getting into specifics," Chiarelli said, "the (draft pick) condition is basically if (Thomas) plays."

Thomas, a two-time Vezina Trophy winner as the NHL's top goalie, has played in 378 regular-season games ? all with the Bruins. He has gone 196-121-45 with a 2.48 GAA and 31 shutouts. Thomas ranks fourth on Boston's career wins list and third in shutouts,

He also has a 29-21 mark in the postseason with a 2.07 GAA and six shutouts. Thomas won the Vezina and Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP when the Bruins won the Stanley Cup in 2011.

"He had a very good career here," Chiarelli said. "I can't say enough of his contributions to the team. The journey he took us on in the Stanley Cup was amazing. I was happy to be along for the ride.

"Nothing would suggest to me he's coming back this season."

Visnovsky was traded to the Islanders by Anaheim last June, and the defenseman filed a grievance to have the deal voided because he claimed a no-trade clause in his original contract with Los Angeles was valid. An arbitrator ruled against him.

Visnovsky left his hometown team in the KHL and joined the Islanders. He wasn't in the lineup Thursday against the Rangers.

Chiarelli wouldn't say if Thomas could ever return to the Bruins, but didn't give any indication that it was likely to happen.

"I don't want to speculate on that," he said. "Tim can be a character and he can also be principled in a lot of different things. He is/was a heck of a goaltender. I liken him sometimes to that left-handed pitcher that's a little quirky but wins a lot of games and throws 200 innings a year.

"I don't know how it would have played out."

Investment in Financial Education Leads to College Access and ...

February 7th, 2013 by admin Leave a reply ?

Student loans, not credit cards, are now the largest source of debt for many Americans. According to new survey by The Institute for College Access and Success, the average college student has a debt load of $24,000. That?s a heavy load for many students, as skyrocketing default rates on student loans are demonstrating.

It?s important that college students know what they?re getting themselves into when they take out large student loans ? and the Department of Education is getting involved.

In July 2010, the U.S. Department of Education developed an education initiative designed to challenge states to create and implement a financial literacy program in troubled school districts. The program is designed to better prepare students to apply for Federal Student Financial Aid (FAFSA) by awarding money to needy school districts for financial literacy education.

Out of 14 initial applications, Tennessee schools scored the highest and will be rewarded with grant funding over the next four years. Through the funding received from The Financial Education for College Access and Success Program, Tennessee will be able to prepare educators to better assist students with financial-aid and financial planning decisions as well as other decisions related to pursuing and succeeding in higher education.

Pursuing post-secondary education, whether at a ground school or online university, is often confusing. The U.S. Department of Education hopes the program will provide students with the information they need about the college enrollment process and the importance and availability of financial help.

In a U.S. Department of Education press release, Secretary of Education Arne Duncan said, ?the United States has the best colleges and universities in the world, but we?re not doing the best job of preparing our students to be college or career-ready. Investing in financial literacy through programs like Financial Education for College Access and Success will ensure that teachers have the tools and resources they need to help students make informed decisions about pursuing and paying for college, and planning for the future.?

Girl shot by Taliban undergoes 2 operations in UK

LONDON (AP) ? A Pakistani schoolgirl who was shot in the head by the Taliban is in stable condition after undergoing two successful operations to reconstruct her skull and restore her hearing, the British hospital treating her said Sunday.

Birmingham's Queen Elizabeth Hospital said doctors for 15-year-old Malala Yousufzai, who was targeted for advocating girls' education, were "very pleased" with her progress after five hours of skull reconstruction and ear surgery on Saturday.

"She is awake and talking to staff and members of her family," the hospital said in a statement, adding that she would continue to recover in the hospital until she is well enough to be discharged.

The teenager drew the world's attention by being shot and critically wounded by Taliban militants on Oct. 9, as she walked home from school in northwestern Pakistan. The Islamist group said they targeted her because she promoted girls' education and "Western thinking" and criticized the militant group's behavior when it took over the scenic Swat Valley where she lived.

At age 11, Malala began to write a blog under a pseudonym for the BBC about life under the Taliban in the Swat Valley. After Pakistan's military ousted the militants in 2009, she began publicly speaking out about the need for girls' education. She appeared frequently in the media and was given one of the country's highest civilian honors for her bravery.

Her story has captured global attention for the struggle for women's rights in Pakistan, and in a sign of her reach the teen made the shortlist for Time magazine's "Person of the Year" for 2012.

Malala was airlifted to Britain from Pakistan in October to receive specialized medical care and protection against further Taliban threats. She is expected to remain in the U.K. for some time after her father, Ziauddin, was given a diplomatic post based in the English city of Birmingham.

So far, doctors say she has made very good progress. She was able to stand, write and return home, and doctors said they have seen minimum signs of brain damage.

Joe Benavidez and Demian Maia take UFC 156 decisions

Demian Maia and Joe Benavidez started UFC 156's main card with decision wins on Saturday night.

In the battle of the wrestler vs. the grappler, grappling whiz Demian Maia easily won over wrestler Jon Fitch.

Fitch, who wrestled collegiately at Purdue, could not stop Maia's takedowns. Throughout all three rounds, Maia took Fitch's back, and controlled him from there throughout. The one saving grace for Fitch was that he could stop Maia's submissions, but Fitch offered no offense. The judges saw it 30-27 on every card for Maia.

Maia has found welterweight to be a much more welcoming weight class. He has three wins there, over Fitch, Rick Story and Dong Hyun Kim. Fitch, on the other hand, has hit a rough patch. He is 1-2-1 in his last four fights.

Joe Benavidez won over Ian McCall to start off the main card. Benavidez had the better of McCall early on, wobbling him early in the first round, but McCall's grappling kept Benavidez at bay in the second round. Benavidez stopped McCall's takedown attempts and wobbled him early in the third round. The judges saw it 29-28 across the board for Benavidez.

Both fighters lost their last bouts to the flyweight champ, Demetrious Johnson. Getting the win at UFC 156 was key for each fighter to get another shot at the belt. Benavidez's win puts him to 17-3, with his last two losses coming in title fights.

Egyptians march in fresh protests nationwide

CAIRO (AP) ? Thousands of Egyptians marched across the country, chanting against the rule of the Islamist President Mohammed Morsi, in a fresh wave of protests Friday, even as cracks appeared in the ranks of the opposition after its political leaders met for the first time with the rival Muslim Brotherhood.

The protests continue a week of political rioting that engulfed the country and left up to 60 people dead. The violence prompted Morsi to declare a state of emergency in three restive Suez Canal cities, impose a curfew that thousands of the cities' angry residents defied in night rallies, and left him with eroding popularity in the street.

On Friday, thousands of protesters in the Mediterranean city of Port Said at the northern tip of Suez Canal, which witnessed the worst clashes and biggest number of causalities the past days, pumped their fists in the air while chanting, "Leave, leave, Morsi." They threatened to escalate pressure with civil disobedience and a work stoppage at the vital Suez Canal authority if their demand for punishment of those responsible for protester death is not met.

"The people want the Republic of Port Said," protesters chanted, voicing a wide sentiment among residents that they are fed up of negligence and mistreatment by central government and that they want to virtual independence.

"Your policy is: I don't hear, I don't talk and I don't see," read a flyer distributed by protesters.

Buses carrying protesters from two other Suez Canal cities of Suez and Ismailia carried more protesters to the Port Said rallies.

Last week's violence first erupted on the eve of the second anniversary of 2011 uprising that toppled down longtime authoritarian ruler Hosni Mubarak's regime. It accelerated a day later when security forces fired at protesters killing at least 11 dead, most of them in the city of Suez.

The next day, riots exploded in Port Said after a court convicted and sentenced to death 21 defendants ? mostly locals ? for a mass soccer riot in the city's main stadium a year ago. Residents saw the verdict as politicized. Over the next few days, around 40 people were killed in the city in unrest that saw security forces firing on a funeral.

Feb. 1 marks the first anniversary of the mass soccer riot in Port Said that left 74 people dead mostly fans of Al-Ahly, Egypt's most popular soccer team.

Egypt's main opposition political grouping, the National Salvation Front, called for Friday's protests in Cairo, demanding Morsi form a national unity government and amend the constitution, moves they say would prevent the Islamist from governing solely in the interest of his Muslim Brotherhood group.

"The policies of the president and the Muslim Brotherhood are pushing the country to the brink, but they are adopting the same language of the old regime and accusing their opposition of betrayl," the opposition said in a statement. "Instead of responding to the street demands, and working with the rest of the national forces that contributed in the revolution to rescue the nation, they are pointing their arrows to media to stifle freedoms," it added

However, the call came a day after the Front held a meeting with Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood under the aegis of Egypt's premier Islamic institution, Al-Azhar, in their first ever meeting. They and other politicians signed a joint statement denouncing violence.

The meeting appeared to have caused rifts within the opposition, with some saying the Front had handed the Brotherhood the high ground by signing a statement that seemed to focus on protester violence and made no mention of police use of excessive force or explicitly talk of political demands.

"Al-Azhar's initiative talks too broadly about violence as if it's the same to kill a person or break a window and makes no difference between defensive violence and aggressive violence, offering a political cover to expand the repression, detention, killing and torture by the hands of police for the authority's benefit," read a joint statement by 70 activists, liberal politicians, actors and writers.

"The initiative didn't represent the core of the problem and didn't offer solutions but came to give more legitimacy to the existing authority," it added.

Those who attended the Thursday's rare meeting between Egypt's rival political camps defended the anti-violence initiative.

Ahmed Maher, co-founder of April 6 group which led the anti-Mubarak uprising, said in a tweet: "I am against violence as a solution." An opposition party leader Ahmed Said said in a statement, "no one can say no to an initiative to stop violence."
